- Born in Birkenhead, attended Birkenhead Institute secondary school before undertaking marine engineering apprenticeship at Cammell Laird & Co. Completed my time as qualified draughtsman in Engineering Design Office. Entered Merchant Navy as J/E with Shaw Savill & Albion Line on cargo vessels before transferring to tankers with the mighty Joe Shell as fiver.
