Joined the British Centaur as EDH in 1967. Did one trip as EDH, then did the GP course in Liverpool and re joined the Centaur a few weeks later. I signed a company contract on that ship, and remained with BP until 1977. Great company I thought, when a lot of development within the company was going on. Prudhoe Bay, North Sea, Opening up markets in the US by buying up several US oil companies, bigger & bigger ships, though the number of ships was reduced. All very exciting I thought.

No involvement with the company as such, but co-authored the book BRITISH TANKERS with Ray Solly, published by Chatham Publishing 2005. Where has the time gone?

Remember Swansea

When I was a youngster the view from my bedroom overlooked Swansea Bay and Swansea Docks. The bay saw many BP Tankers arriving and going into Kings Dock (or was it Queens Dock) to discharge oil - much from Aden. BP LLandarcy was the refining works and the Tank Farm on the sea front always had that interesting smell of oil. Because of the shipping in Swansea was the deciding factor to go to sea. Unfortunately my eyesight was not good enough to become a Deck Officer (good bye to BP), but sailed in the Pursers office for 10 enjoyable years.
Cheers - Spotter185

Morning all, just clambered aboard the SH liferaft from the wreckage of SN.
1968 intake Engineer cadet - Poplar Tech, South Shields and Hawthorn Leslie workshop experience.
Sailed Br.Light as E/C 1972; Br.Holly as A/J/E 1972; Br. Light ( again! lucky me!)as J/E 1973; Br.Destiny as J/E 1973-4; Br.Aviator as 4/E 1974-5 (my best trip); Br. Patience as 3/E 1975-6 (two trips); Br. Promise as 3/E 1976-7; Border Pele as 3/E 1977-8.
Packed it in to raise a dynasty of little Steve Hs ashore. Never regretted joining BP, sometimes regretted leaving.

Hi all, been here for a while but I can't remember giving a quick summary of my time wth BP.
I was a 1971 eng. cadet doing phase 1 at Poplar Tech. and phase 3 at Glasgow CNS. First trip was on the Inventor just as the 1973 war and oil crisis kicked off. I spent most of my time on motor ships, particularly River boats. I left in 1986 as a 3/E when the axe fell, last ship being the Security. The wife was expecting our first child, and so took my chances ashore, although unemployment levels were still high.

John,

That name dully rings a bell ... I am sure I know the name but at present cannot put him in place.

What was your connection?
