Queen Elizabeth (1)

If at first you don't succeed in the Other Place run it past the historians on SH.

In 1971 I was an Engineer Cadet on the Texaco Newcastle sailing from Saigon to Kharg Island. As we approached Singapore we met Queen Elizabeth heading towards Hong Kong. All hands gave her 3 cheers and the word went around that she was steaming on only 6 boilers, we had 2. The date was 4, 5, 6 or 7 July 1971.
I would appreciate it if anyone has the exact date she departed or passed Singapore. Many thanks, E-S.

My mistake, it was August 1971. E-S

Many thanks, Lancs.

I'll have to dig out my Discharge Book and re-check my dates.

The 6 boilers in use were C1 to C4 and D1&2 which fed steam to the after ER and then to the two inboard props. While in Aruba she had 294 boiler tubes replaced. Ted Phillip the advisory chief on board managed to nick the ships bell which is now on the QE2. On arrival in Singapore on the 7th July she had a fly past of the RAF.
