Times gone by / respect

I remember as a kid mates and myself scrumping apples
from a orchard , had to go down a old quarry to get to it .

when we came back up a policeman was standing there
my mates had run away quick , policeman grabbed me
and gave me a lecture , then clipped me across the ear .

got home and dad saw my face , he asked what was wrong
so i told him .
next thing i knew he clipped my other ear , i asked why and
he said it was not because i took the apples but that it was
because i was daft enough to get caught

Dad knew the policeman and in the pub later they had a laugh
about it .
everybody knew their local policeman , in those days most rode
around on bicycles and knew what was going on and stopped to talk.

Ah yes! I remember it well! I lived in a village where the policeman was the ex-poacher, so he knew everything there was to know about what went on.
