skipper, first and second mate. cook, bosun, carpenter. Bunting tosser (in case we sail into a naval port) we have cardboard cut out deck technicians. and plastic stewards. also would like to have a purser (for the subs).
All the above crew wanted urgent to save us from going into semi permanent lay up.

Lord V is ambidexter, he can cook and talk at the same time. He does a mean curry, Simla Curry.

Is that the curry with sultanas in it?

I can recommend the food in the BHP Mess at the Port Hedland Detention Centre.
Endless variety and quantity.
Even small frogs in the bathroom.

I see ''Tugfan'' reading. We could use a towmaster aboard for some towing jobs we might get. we are famous for our 300 ton BP. the cut outs know how to rig a Bridle so he wouldnt need to get his hands dirty. (we did some interesting tow jobs in the past with this vessel)

Mr varley get on the blower and see what the agent has for us will you. case of old tawney and a box of cigars for you on this one David.

When I've finished my little blow-out I'll nip round to the Baltic before heading to LCY and home. If any of brokers are up for sharing our cargo spaces - providing whatever it is has a good rate and won't contaminate the Tawny tanks - I'll get back to the agents ASAP.

The underwriters are asking for a declaration that we will not engage in the triangular trade. I have enquired for alternative cover but so far the deductible asked is astronomic.

(Here until Tuesday - funds permitting).

BB me oul china many of our shipmates have hit the deck, popped their clogs or succumbed to diseases of the liver and we remember them with affection. More so as we approach the month of November.

However like myself they were Company Contract men, happy days, but we are a diminishing resource and new blood are from the Pool and due allowance must be made. We no longer need to open the extra nozzles and go hither and tither at Full Ahead, let us cut or cloth according to our measure and accept a couple of posts every week or so rather than sacksful every day.

Let us sit back in graceful retirement and await His Lordships missive from an deatach mor.

I'm still enjoying reading some of the earlier posts. It should really be edited into a book and published. I only read between deck swabbing sessions though and they are becoming quite dangerous. I poked a passing cut-out in the groin with the mop handle and all his mates came after me, including the plasticos. My foot got caught in the bucket as I ran away so they heard me wherever I was. I got herded into the forward lounge and had to buy them all drinks to save my skin. I might stick to polishing the propellors and stay out of the way.

With your interest in matters historic, you may care to note the this is actually the THIRD incarnation of the Golden Dreamer, although, to be more accurate, number 2 was just a refit of number 1. Hence this is number 2.

I visited the "Dontgothere,youbollix" site over the weekend and was made to feel most welcome, indeed at one stage I felt like the Prodigal Son.
Being a bit of a dunderhead I never fully understood the reason(s) for the split but I believed it had something to do with some chap buying the website and buggering up members photo galleries.
One wonders if time is as great healer as we were led to believe? It was a messy and acrimonious divorce and old wounds are steadily healing, someone ought to make an effort,,,,,,,,

The Gallery, or Media as they call it, is now intact(ish) but not nearly as user friendly as it is hereabouts.

Both pretty much what ES and Malcolm G say reflects my experience.

To me, the SN Gallery debacle was a great disappointment as, for a time, my 1,300 odd photos there simply disappeared (along with a squillion pics posted by many others).

Unfortunately, we were all treated with contempt by the new owners of the site at the time. Sadly, they believed that 'one size fits all' (or 'nobody')!

Both sites have their advantages but I find the SH Gallery easier to navigate and more user friendly. I now have almost 1,800 photos here, some of which I have transferred from SN, but the larger SH format is a great advantage to a grumpy old b.... like me.

I'm reporting back aboard, whether rested or recuperified is another matter.

Amongst the pleasures of my run shore is usually a pint or two at Chequers of Jermyn Street.

I do not like to grumble but the only bitter, London Pride, was 'off' and when I tried half a pint of some indescript IPA it was served in something reminiscent of a small child's toothmug when I tried the remaining pump my best coaxing managed to get a half of something pretending to be porter in a stemmed lager glass - both would have undrinkable had they not been alcoholic. I wonder not what is to become of the big smoke but wonder at what it has become.

Had dinner at V. Posh hotel - private dining room. Found fellow guest was 93 year old ex Shaw Savill steward. Have offered to sign him on here if his carer can be encouraged to do computer for him. (Suspect it is the only time two sailor boys had crossed that threshold when unencumbered with the luggage of others). But even here cold Fino was not all that cold and tasted rather overly long opened and another guest had her chicken bloodily underdone.

Nothing was up to it's usual scratch. I even had to run a guerrilla group at my club to provide some fellow members with refreshment, cognac and toothmugs (in extremis) as the bar now closes at 2230. I would fear blackballing but one of said ladies was an ex-director of the establishment.

And if you think I am moaning you should have heard the ladies glooming over their failing-to-shop expeditions and, in the case of Sister-in-Law, the failure of tube trains to train when they should.

And I caught a cold (of the viral kind not stock exchange kind - now the UK's lady chancellor has given me one of those too). If anyone calls me to change a light bulb in the next month just take a guess at where the old one is going to get shoved.
