There's something a bit screwy about the link Geoff but I found the clip (I think.) I'm still a bit gobsmacked at 1971 … it doesn't seem that long ago …

First heard on Radio London in 1966, and in later years on BBC Three Counties Radio on Sunday evenings. You knew you were going to hear some great songs and some entertaining banter from old Cardboard Shoes himself, Keith Skues!

So far ahead of its time, it's practically science fiction …..

Thanks for the link Geoff. I've told my children and G/children that I felt lucky to be there at the birth of Rock 'n Roll. To me it was like a breath of fresh air. Buddy and The Crickets were my favourite group/band and I admit to shedding tears on 3/2/59 aged 16.
When I could afford to buy a Fender Strat. guitar, I got the re-issue of the 1957 Tobacco Sunburst one as seen on the Chirping Crickets LP. I had that album back then and only recently got a replacement one off ebay.

And to think the sax solo only happened because the guitarist was ill the day they had booked the studio.

Here's the original.

Here's the cover version by the group of the same name.

I like the raw simplicity of the first version, but the second slower version is more atmospheric. The band played this as their sign out song at a live gig.

I first heard this in the summer of 1967, on Radio London before that great station went off the air for all time. It refreshes so many memories, not least because my nickname at school in those days was Jack.

Of course, the Teenage Opera never did get completed.

Which one of these appeals more?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1-ikfwXOtqE

(Art Garfunkel.)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FvzN...7KdRoaCWmEe8jU

(The Flamingos.)

I like them both, but I think the 1959 Doo Wop approach just edges it.

Have to be honest, neither is very appealing. Especially compared to Frank Sinatra's rendition.

This cheers me up on dark days, particularly now with a proximal fracture of the humerus. tripped in the garden 3 weeks ago.

Here are two versions of the most maudlin song in history;
First by Hank Snow;
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8j-Dd0WDB94

Second by The Travelling Willburys
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6SqF56nj2LU

The question, which is the most revolting?

They seem diabolically similar to me …. (it's the same link ) ….

But when it comes to maudlin …. (this used to make my old dear cry, but when I heard it I just wanted to climb the nearest church tower with a rifle ...)

I fixed it Bob. Listening to it again, I reckon that the Travelling Willbury's version is possibly the worst track they ever made, and thats saying something!

Thanks for fixing it Pat … (sort of.)

Makes my day of time travelling even worse by introducing more suffering.

I am not partial to much of that kind of stuff, but for some reason I like this.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dwy7MjaquCM

The odd stop/start bits and some of the guitar playing is fascinating, and the shots of the audience dancing is very cheerful.

I used to think that was the greatest song involving drink until this came along:

(It mentions Lonnie but where??)

We have had some really morbid and dreary songs lately, and Tom posted some good old drinking songs. This one combines both themes!
