There are pipes, and pipes, .... and then there are Uilleann pipes. (The only pipes that touch the soul, ... well apart from the pipes that connect your bog to the sewer ... they're pretty important too nobody can deny.)

Make high pitched whistley noises all you like, and caterwauling scotch pipes (a true assault on the ears) ... but trust the Irish to make something much more out of it.

Seems to me that this, or something very much like it followed on right after?

Music that will never die.

A little more of the pipes.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4MxFsk4sYM4

A very close variation comes from Northumbria rather than Ireland.

Good videos. That's the first time I've seen the Northumbrian Pipes.

It was interesting seeing the history of the Uilleann pipes and how they nearly faded away. I think the first time I got fascinated with the sound of those was from James Horner's terrific music soundtrack for the film 'Titanic.'

They sounded exactly the right tone of sadness for the event.

The Northumbrian pipes are a very evocative instrument that mixes so well with the sharper vocal tones on a Northern voice. A beautiful sound.

You mean Northern voices like this? (Although not a Uilleann pipe to be heard anywhere!)

The bagpipes I can manage; so long as one gives the occasional puff to keep the bag full of air its just a matter of the fingers on the chanter.
Northumbrian and Irish pipes are different beasts. How does one continually oscillate ones elbow to maintain the air pressure whilst running fingers up and down the chanter? Meanwhile what does one do with ones face - smile? grimace? look blank? Without a mouthpiece to blow into the head becomes redundant!

AND what if one is left-handed?

I prefer to think of it as the audience going round to admire my other aspect.

The Sound of The Pipes

It doesn't matter to me whether it is the Scottish Pipes, Uilleann, or Northumbrian I love them all. The sound they make is just so evocative, taking you to another place and time but always going deep. They can make you weep or want to make you dance until you drop. They have led men into battle, cats from hell I think the Germans called them.

Thank you so much for all the great UTube clips. I am pleased to say that I don't think this thread has had the kiss of death yet.

Why do you think it's not the kiss of death - Your post could be the last one and that would be it....

Hand on a minute, that doesn't work either.....

As long as a few of us continue to talk endlessly about almost nothing, this will be fine. Once we start bickering about the best type of bagpipe, we are finished. However...

No, I can't do it.

El kapputo, finito, fin, ended, it is no more, bereft of life, an ex-thread, all statements to the effect that this thread is a going concern are hereby negated, it's shuffled off this mortal coil and joined the choir in vestibule, it ******* snuffed it.

(something tells me this wont work either … )

Nope, It can't fall off, it's still nailed to its perch - in a certain manner of speaking.
