The dog

RAF Scampton is due to close. Known for 'The Dam Busters' and 'The Red Arrows'. Guy Gibsons dog is buried on the base. There was a mention on the local news stating the dog will be reburied elsewhere (the memorial). I wondered why the news reader didn't give the dogs name instead of referring to it as 'THE DOG'.

I do know the name. . However I can't understand why whoever is talking about it (THE DOG) don't mention why they are not allowed to say the name. Not everyone on this planet knows the name of Guy Gibsons dog.

Don't tell them you have an original uncensored copy of the film.

Its a bad word to use on a Black man now, back then before PC Police not so much, however we are talking about the name they gave the dog not a person so how could it be racial. Lets all call him Nipper, that was the name of my dog for 14 years, best dog ever.

True or not I was told that the only reason a remake of the Dambusters movie didn't happen was because they (the film makers) were not prepared to use the dog's name in the remake. I didn't know that the original film has been censored?

I have the Henry Hall 78 disk of "The Sun Has Got His Hat On" with the naughty verse in it. I hope nobody ever finds it.

It is a strange thing, and the word has changed in meaning in that it never refers just to the colour of a garment or a dog nowadays. I am glad that it has become unacceptable, I just wish it never had been used in such an insulting way that made it so.

The original film was most certainly censored as the bomb which was shown was not the type used as it was still one the secret list. The bomb did not have the mechanism to make it start spinning before it was released.

You can't 'edit' history in order to be PC. It's a daft idea. Nobody is arguing that the word is unacceptable when used in a racial context … but come on … Guy Gibson's dog ? … it was what it was.

To my mind you start 'editing' history for reasons of PC you're on a very dangerous course.

P.S. Many years ago we had a black "heinz" dog and it was called "Nigger" and we did not consider it racist or anything other than it was black. Things change as I remember there was a "Glolly Wog" as an emblem on a famous jam company's jam. One of the well known childerns stories was one called "Little Black Sambo" and I read it to our childern many imes and though nothing other than it was a story they wished to be read to then ad nausem.
Times change and the PC crowd wish to change history to comply with todays standards and as withe the well known Shakespeare line the evil lives after him and the good is buried with his bones (or there about!!)

The dog had a name, NIGGER, there I've said it so hopefully the PC brigade won't turn up outside my home with flaming crosses.

Fingers crossed the RAF will remove the remains and have them suitably re-interred in a new location.

Tmac,

If you need a hand defending the perimeter from the PC Brigade I am available as I am renowned for tact and diplomacy (ha bloody ha) in lieu of political correctness.

It's a sad day when we are manipulating history in the same way that we accuse other countries of so doing rather than give well deserved credit to Nigger. We owe it to Gibson and the thousands of all services who died in WW 2.

Onya Tmac 1720 and Geoff,

I fully endorse your comments and #10 Lakercapt too.

If my memory serves me right there was a shoe polish named Nigger Brown, and I think it was Robinsons Jam jar labels that had the 'Golly Wogs' on them.

Can't wait for the PC lot to do away with Man Holes!

Steve

Man Cave: Hidden away orifices or secret bunkers in the Earth's crust in which men keep enormous piles of otherwise useless rubbish items.

All sorts of stuff down this manhole, no doubt?

Quite true. Nigger Brown was an official colour in the leather goods trade. Robertson made the jam, Robinson made barley water. You ate Robertson's when you were well, and drank Robinson's when you were poorly. Robertson's preserves were great to mix up in a bowl of rice pudding. All sorts of colours could be created.

Thanks for the correction re- the makers of Jam and Barley water it was all a long time ago.

In our house when feeling poorly we got a mug of stout with brown sugar, stirred with a red hot poker. The aroma was great and the taste even better, a miracle cure for sure.

Never have tasted Barley water, but highly recommend the above.

Rum, home squeezed fresh lemon juice, boiling hot water in three equal portions, with a teaspoon of brown sugar stirred in. Especially good for colds, sore throats, etc.

John,
My pics were in Bratislava but they have good manholes in Budapest too. All brass - I wonder what this would be worth as scrap?
