VLCC Stuck in Mud

The 299,446 dwt Belgian flagged VLCC 'Alex' has been aground in mud in the Java Sea for the past week. With a draft of 20.3m, she was en-route Ras Tanura to Ningbo, China. No reports of pollution or damage.

that got me thinking when the big underwater earthquakes happened did it affect the charts in any way re the depth ect in diff areas .or is it a daft question

I don't think it is a daft question, but perhaps to add a little qualification, perhaps, it is more likely to affect charted depths at the estuaries of large rivers that may have built up a silt pile over the years. When affected by a quake, the built up bank can possible subside to the point of even causing a tsunami, let alone reconfiguring the bottom topography.

Ocean floors certainly change with earthquakes - this was dramatically shown after the Kaikoura quake here in NZ.

The small tourist launch basin floor rose, stranding most of the whale-watching boats. Frantic work was undertaken to get the boats (Kaikoura's money earner) operational. The navy did a quick survey to allow access for relief aid boats plus an area offshore for relief ships to anchor. A detailed hydrographic survey from Cook Strait to Banks Peninsula is planned - the area at present being subject to a Notice to Mariners warning of possible depth variation to those charted.

Vessel has now been refloated following an offloading of some cargo and is proceeding towards Singapore under her own power.
