Very interesting video. Didn't check when it was made, but prior to current 'elf and safety -- no life jackets for the sailors ???? Mind you, I don't remember anyone wearing one when I was on the Worcester in '54 - '56.

Can't think how I missed this when considering which college to go to in 1967. I ended up at Leith but this not only would have been closer to home (important consideration when on a bike) but what a place to be.

Probably just as well … too many distractions in that area. The Lake District is an old stomping ground of mine.

Have to say I never heard off it. Most of the RO's I knew were from the South of Ireland. And called Shamus or Paddy, Wray Castle chaps would be Aubrey's or Basil's.

When I started my PMG2 course at Manchester's College of International Marine Radio (Brook's Bar near to Old Trafford) in 1958, the college was run by two men, Woods and Tomlinson. After running the Brook's Bar venture successfully for several years they had decided to open a residential radio college to train R/Os in Cumberland - Wray Castle. Tomlinson left Brook's Bar to run the new venture, which had just opened, leaving Woods to run the Manchester end of the business. There were initial doubts about the viability of the residential course but by the time I went to sea, the courses there were filling up nicely and there was a growing sense of optimism.


Eventually it closed some time around the end of the 1990s but I remember seeing advertisements for GMDSS courses being offered there - you would have had to be some optimist to sign up for one of those.

I think it is a mistake to jumble the idea of rural areas with effete gentlepersons. Wray castle was quite remote in the times before everyone having a car and buildings like that could be quite spartan (I believe any illegitimate offspring were probably exposed on a fell side). Let's not Basil or Montague without reason.

All offspring are left out for at least one night, must be a north slope. Survival of the thickest dontcha know. The illegitimate were cared for as for the heir. They just didn't get a handle or an estate when papa popped his clogs. Any fine house with sons would engage a tweenie (had they not done so before) at the first crack of a young gentleman's voice. (Stopped 'em taking up with a school chum, unless they employed an ugly one, of course).

As for that pastime E-S, I should choose a pygmy ewok for least discomfort and sod the introduction to Jake.

I think if I wanted to put you down, as you say I would be less subtle. I think Wray Castle would have been cold and isolated, I stand to be corrected. That side of the lake had a rough track when I spent some time there, buildings like that could be spartan.

Much as that is flattering one doesn't get a handle by drinking with them. Only by one's mother sleeping with them. As long as your (entirely justified) inferiority does not give you a hankering for feeling minors you should be OK.

It does make one think that the standard of hygiene must have been fairly poor if you could hide a fox up your vest and nobody smelt it. But that's Wireless Operators, I suppose.

We have just done the plumbers' relationship with flatus. It is because we are around them that you don't smell us, a sort of olfactory camouflage. What you miss is that there were one or two of us from farming backgrounds. Where there is a fox but no sheep...…….
