Empress of Ireland
Canadian Pacific liner Empress of Ireland 14190 tons. Built by Fairfield’s SB at Govan.Launched 27 January 1906, with a service speed of 17 knots. She cost £ 375,000 to build. She was sunk in the St Lawrence seaway on 29 May 1914 and sank in 14 minutes after a collision in fog with the Norwegian collier Storstad which had an ice strengthened bow.She had a crew of 420 of which 172 were lost, she carried 1542 passengers of which 1057 were lost. The collision happened so quick that there was not enough time to close the watertight doors. The Empress was under the command of Captain Henry Kendall who survived. Bob Ballard who found the Titanic said “he had never heard of E of I “ until the Titanic finding.

A gallery of pictures (it did not load very fast for me, so maybe you too might need a bit of patience): https://www.nrk.no/dokumentar/xl/den...lbum-1-7940570
Here is the page with the story for which the above picture collection was made. It is in Norwegian so if you cannot have it translated on your computer it would not be of much, if any, interest at all, unless the above link refuses to load.: https://www.nrk.no/dokumentar/xl/den...anic-1.7932297 Last edited by SJB; 24th November 2020 at 13:45. |
