Shipping forecast.
I love to listen to the shipping forecast, especially at night with the light off. You can do a trip round the coast and more with the shore stations and inland waters.
I know this is now very old hat and everyone is so used to it, But read aloud the places on the inshore waters map, it is so evocative. http://www.metman66.com/map_marine.htm

There's another side to it too ... when you're driving along, say going on holiday or a visit or some such, when you hear the shipping forecast you listen to all the familiar shipping areas being quoted, picturing them in your mind ... and thinking to yourself ... 'bloody glad I'm nowhere near Rockall tonight.' (or wherever the bad weather may be, although Rockall seems to get more than its fair share ... )

I relieved the regular sparks on an Isle of Man ferry, at short notice.
I took the morse shipping forecast and after typing it up, took it out to the bridge where the captain was. He took one look at it, threw it in the rosie with a comment 'What a load of rubbish' He had a little (about 8") tv propped in the bridge window and had a small transistor radio turned into the Irish station RTE. He was about 6-8hrs ahead of the one that I had brought out for him. I soon learned. Didn't bother again! |
