I never got to LM but sailed with a few lads on Moss Tanker's Luminetta and Lucerna who had previously been on Lumiere on the South African charter. Lumiere regularly took oil to LM and those lads always talked about the Piri-Piri prawns; almost as if it was all they went ashore for!!!

Peri-Peri prawns with a fresh baguette and a bottle of cold Lagoste (Vinho Verde) in a bar on the street of many dodgy bars.

There was a prefabricated iron building in town, the Casa de Ferro (Iron House) originally built in Belgium, the structure was degned by Gustave Eiffel. How mad was that - must have been like an oven!. Strange man - even did a similar oddity in Luanda, Angola.

And of course the famous Hotel Polana and LM radio!

There is an Eiffel cast-iron church in Santa Rosalia, Baja California. It was fabricated in Brasil. Santa Rosalia grew up around a lead mine, exploited by a French company. The original buildings are wood, the timber being imported from Ecuador. It is also a point of departure for fishing for the terrifying Humboldt Squid, known as the Doberman of the Deep! The nearby volcano erupts on the seabed and it would seem to attract the squid. Worth a Google or two!

FWIW - Eiffel also designed the bridge over the river at Chinon where my eldest sister now lives.
Quite a prodigious and varied output from that man.

After building the Suez Canal he attempted to dig a canal in Panama but achieved little. He was an engineering diminutive compared to IKB.

That would be Ferdinand de Lesseps, a slightly older Froggy, who was a diplomat not an engineer.
Back to Eiffel - one piece of his work that people hardly ever see is the framework inside the Statue of Liberty.

Tony have never known it as the street of many dodgy bars. It was always the street of 1000 ...holes.
