Staff Chiefs

What did staff chiefs actually do, the ones I sailed with as far as I knew did precisely nothing, they never went near the engine room and I never saw one in a boiler suit and the only "work" I ever saw him do was carry his brief case to a lodge meeting on board. Fast forward to 2018 on a Cunard cruise and I saw a staff chief in a boiler suit (complete with 4 ring epauletts) handling a fire hose on a fire drill. So perhaps things have changed.

In Kuwait Shipping the Chief liaised with the Master, the Staff Chief poured for them and the Sec ran the job.
