Another U.S. Warship collides

Just seen/heard on BBC World News (that's TV) at 0300Z: The destroyer USS John McCain has collided with a cargo ship somewhere off Singapore. 20 men missing.

They also mentioned that the Captain of the USS Fitzgerald has been disciplined: presumably that means they are admitting it was the warship's fault.

Saw the John McCain on the news, a huge hole in her side.

Both ships built at the same yard and steering gear failure being put forward as the cause.

Interesting.

But even with a steering gear failure what on earth were two ships doing so close to each other and why was there no time to use another steering system?

McCloggie you know that Exercises are carried out with the Military using Merchant Vessels as dummy targets and as both US vessels appear to be of the 'Stealth' capability the Merchant vessel will not know they are there. A trip down the North Sea at one time could be interesting if your vessel was designated a dummy target by the RAF.
