Hello - Wei - Mushi mushi
Joined UASC 40 years ago this month and did just over 6 years as J/E. Booted out in 1983 to make way for the cheaper option (Dahle Muslims as the Arabs say)
In case you are wondering - English, Mandarin, Japanese telephone greetings. Not as one J/E on the engine room phone answered - "Speak" (It was 2 am and he thought it would be the 2nd Mate) - Cough, "Do you know who you are talking to, this is the Captain" - Replies said J/E "Do you know who you are talking to?" "No" says the Captain. J/E replaces handset. Next morning J/E gets ticking off by smirking Chief Engineer "The Captain may not know who was on watch last night - but I do" Captain was Captain Quigely, 3/E on watch was Paul Thistlethwait, Name of the guilty J/E escapes me.
