Spill into Lyttleton
I remember when on a BP Tanker Lyttleton harbour was flooded with our cargo. Motor spirit I seem to recall.
What happened was that we were discharging to a tank ashore which overflowed, the overflow flowed into an overflow tank, which in turn overflowed into the harbour. A lot of the motor spirit ended up in the harbour, which was promptly closed. The first I knew of the situation was when all crew were ordered up to the Monkey Island for safety. The whole harbour surface was shimmering with the fumes. All anyone could do was wait for the fumes to dissipate which took some time. I wonder what happened to the Shore Walla who was in charge of the shoreside side of the operation? |
